ximeralabs I just updated my other site ximeraLabs. Well, I say ‘update’… all I did was add a new splash/holding page — whatever you want to call it. The last time I updated the site was in 2006! But thats the way it goes I guess. XimeraLabs started life as my primary website in 2000-2001 — part graphic playground, part portfolio. Over the years there seemed to be less and less need to do something with the site as a creative outlet, mainly because I launched this site in 2003, and focussed all my attention here. Adding to that fact that I could/can use work as a creative outlet, setting aside time to populate ximeraLabs with experiments for the sake of experimenting became a moot point.

Anyway. During the past few years I’ve collected a load of (unused) work, failed experiments, tests, etc… that I think have more life than just slowly rotting away in a folder on a drive, so I think its time to start remixing and putting out content again.

I have just updated our /Mr and Mrs M./ website, adding projects Liz and I have been doing recently, including a lot of work for German fashion duo Felder Felder, who we’ve been working with since 2007.

Go have a look at our work!

Logan's Run poster I’m happy to announce that WIWP have reissued the posters from their “Now Showing” exhibit, including my Logan’s Run poster!
Wear It With Pride have teamed up with Blanka (no stranger to fans of fine design products) to produce the new prints which are now available in 2 formats: 50cmx70cm, priced at £75 GPB (edition of 25), and a cheaper A2 sized format priced £50GBP (unlimited print run). Both are Giclée print on Da Vinci Archival Art Paper.

WIWP is having a site overhaul at the moment, so in the meantime you can buy the poster HERE from their Flickr shop.

Just in time for that perfect holiday gift!

Kleber homepage

Today we launched a brand new design for the Kleber site, the first major site refresh in over 8 years — that is a long time in web years.
Its not like we didn’t try before, but you know what they say: you’re your own worst client! I think we started considering a redesign back in 2003 or 2004, but we didn’t really come up with anything we liked immediately — and the site was actually fine as it was. So we left it there. This scenario would repeat itself a few times over the years, and each time we went “ah, if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it”. And we were too busy with client projects to spend any real time on developing something new. The only thing we added was a much needed RSS feed.

Around this time last year, we started to get itchy again and vowed to make some real progress and redesign the site. After a few false starts of over complex designs including sliding timelines and such we latched onto the concept of a flat, unfolded box as the container for our content, and we got to the stage of having a working demo and even ported content over from the old site.
All systems go it seemed. But as client projects again demanded our attention the new design was left gathering dust, and with the months going by we realized that we had strayed a bit too far, losing the simplicity that has been a trademark of Kleber.

So last week Chris finally took the ideas from the last redesign, fine-tuned them and at long last we now have a brand new site. There’s a few small things that we’ll add (like rotating colour schemes), but the emperor is wearing his new clothes!

Maybe now is a good time to revisit the business cards…

Massive congratulations to Rantz Hoseley and all our fellow creators involved with the book! On top of that we were also nominated in the Best Publication Design category.
Its great to have contributed in our own way to CBT and I believe the beers are on Rantz.

GDR_Cover I just received the news that Graphic Design, Referenced — a book on the language, applications, and history of graphic design — edited by Bryony Gomez-Palacio and Armin Vit (of Under Consideration fame), has been released.

Graphic Design, Referenced serves as a comprehensive source of information and inspiration by documenting and chronicling the scope of contemporary graphic design, stemming from the middle of the twentieth century to today.

I’m pleased to say that the alternate design of my Logan’s Run poster (the black one) has been included in the book for the chapter on Practice, which “highlights some of the most iconic work produced that not only serve as examples of best practices, but also illustrate its potential lasting legacy”.

Europe By Designers

The Europe By Designers competition that ran a few months ago has announced its winners, or rather an exhibit of the 52 designs that were chosen. From the site:

EUROPE BY DESIGNERS is an international artistic project whose aim is to unveil a multitude of images of Europe from the inside and from the outside. Design as the expression of a cultural vision, a political vision or a simple and unposed feeling… Design and its diversity as a new way to catch Europe.

I was one of the judges, and so partially responsible for the selection that is now displayed. And to be brutally honest I’m surprised at the quality of some of the pieces that made it through. I know that an open competition yields a large fluctuation in work, but it looks like the overall sense of quality control seemed to be incredibly relaxed. Sorry to burst your bubble but thats how I’m seeing it. Personally, I think the list could be slashed even further to get rid of some of the tired and clichéd ideas and some badly executed work.

Am I too uptight? Should I be more lenient when I’m judging work, or were my expectations unrealistically high?

Diesel - Only The Brave video still

Just added some new work to the site that my brother Tim and I completed for Diesel: Only The Brave.

I was invited by my friends over at Hellohikimori as one of a select group of designers to create an online art installation as part of the online campaign for Diesels new fragrance.
The project ended up being a collaboration between myself and Tim, who created all the 3D imagery you see in the piece, while I was responsible for the overall art direction, animation and graphics.
