Archive for August, 2009

For the better part of the last two weeks I’ve been spending my evenings and weekends toiling away at logo and poster concepts for the movie adaptation of the cult graphic novel “Fistful of Blood” by Kevin Eastman (!) and Simon Bisley (!), with Digger T. Mesch (of Art Asylum fame) in the directors chair and my friend Liam Sharp as AD. At the moment we’re knee-deep in pre-production, creating key art and visuals, my role thus far is the overall graphic design for the movie: primarily the logo, posters and title cards at a later stage.
We’ve got a pretty interesting group of people involved in this, and even though this is still early days in the development stage, this could potentially be a big deal, especially with Eastman & Co involved (and a new Heavy Metal movie in the works). Anyway, the coming weeks and months will prove interesting and I’ll post bits and pieces as they become cleared for public broadcasting.
I’ve created a Fistful of Blood Flickr set where I will add all movie related design and concept sketches as we progress.
Just found out that a selection of logos I designed between 2006 — 2008 are featured in Taschen’s Logo Design Vol.2, the follow to the 2006 release of the same name, which also includes some of my work. Always fun to be featured in a Taschen book (this is the 4th or 5th time), mainly because they’re affordable and available everywhere, making design books very democratic — some of the first design related books I bought were published by Taschen.
Still, not too sure about that cover though…

VOLTA Business Cards, originally uploaded by helloMuller.
Just finished another batch of cards for the crew at Volta, for whom I also designed the logo & identity a while back. Nothing new design-wise per se, but a continuation of the style, and the chance to use some interesting imagery for new cards.

When a man with .45 meets a man with a rifle, you said, the man with a pistol’s a dead man. Let’s see if that’s true. Go ahead, load up and shoot.

You can read this and more, in the interview I did for siteInspire, where I talk about the recent work we did for DixonBaxi, Kleber, and working for the music industry.

Today we launched a brand new design for the Kleber site, the first major site refresh in over 8 years — that is a long time in web years.
Its not like we didn’t try before, but you know what they say: you’re your own worst client! I think we started considering a redesign back in 2003 or 2004, but we didn’t really come up with anything we liked immediately — and the site was actually fine as it was. So we left it there. This scenario would repeat itself a few times over the years, and each time we went “ah, if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it”. And we were too busy with client projects to spend any real time on developing something new. The only thing we added was a much needed RSS feed.
Around this time last year, we started to get itchy again and vowed to make some real progress and redesign the site. After a few false starts of over complex designs including sliding timelines and such we latched onto the concept of a flat, unfolded box as the container for our content, and we got to the stage of having a working demo and even ported content over from the old site.
All systems go it seemed. But as client projects again demanded our attention the new design was left gathering dust, and with the months going by we realized that we had strayed a bit too far, losing the simplicity that has been a trademark of Kleber.
So last week Chris finally took the ideas from the last redesign, fine-tuned them and at long last we now have a brand new site. There’s a few small things that we’ll add (like rotating colour schemes), but the emperor is wearing his new clothes!
Maybe now is a good time to revisit the business cards…

Misc. 3D Renders, originally uploaded by helloMuller.
More random 3D play. Well, maybe not as random as it seems… Been working on another illustration for WIRED Magazine (this image has nothing to do with it), which kind of got me off on a tangent again digging up old models and breaking them to get new stuff out of it all.
Hopefully I’ll have some time the coming months to apply it to some personal projects.
